AAR

The Giant White Bird of Paradise - Strelitzia Nicolai, Los Angeles, 2018

The wild bananas that grow along the east coast of South Africa, form tall beacons for the birds and insects in the region. Their wide tropical leaves curve from their trunk, down, towards the earth, capturing rain water for lava at their juncture. Aqua nests. An enduring feature of my childhood, the fleshy Strelitzia leaves are easy to chop from their trunk, and are excellent roof materials for forts and bush houses. A tree of Kwa Zulu, a tree of my childhood. Of days well spent. Of connection. Aar, an experiment in Strelitzia-spine-concentricity, a nest for friends in the Natal sunshine.

Hot-rolled mild steel, powder coat and hand-paint finish.
